Composite structures are lighter, stronger, stiffer, and more durable and have now moved from their high-performance, one-off type applications into our everyday lives. The key to achieving this is cost-effective, fast, reliable, and reproducible parts – a process, regardless of industry sector, that involves automation including simulation. We have invited our customers from different industry sectors to provide an insight into their composite projects using Altair software solutions.

  • 13.15 - 13.35: Design Freedom for Sandwich Structures: How Multiscale Simulation takes us beyond Foam and Honeycomb with 3D Printed Lattice Structures
Traditional cores are limiting the capabilities to apply sandwich structures in areas where a certain level of geometrical complexity is reached. To ensure the successful application more flexibility is needed. In this session a boundary conformal design of laser sintered sandwich cores and simulation of graded lattice cells using a forward homogenization approach will be presented.

  • 13.35 - 13.55: Optimisation and composite materials in Architectural Designs
With more than 30 years of experience in the field and some of the most iconic Architectural realisations to date, Gurit is uniquely positioned to address the many parameters at play in the manufacture and analysis of composite structures. Gurit engineers complement their experience and know-how with the Altair Hyperworks suite of software to generate simulation driven structural designs throughout more of the design cycle.

  • 13.55 - 14.15: Increasing the efficiency of damage modelling for filament wound pressure vessels through multi-scale simulation
A key design issue for new hydrogen-based vehicle drive systems is assuring safety of the start-of-the-art polymer lined, carbon fiber overwrapped vessels working at pressures over 700 bar. Cikoni will describe how a multiscale approach gives a better estimation of burst pressures and insight into damage mechanisms for different laminate layups, at both the macroscopic and micromechanical levels, to validate simulation models for structural optimisation of layups, along with life predictions.

  • 14.15 - 14.35: FiRMA – Failure in Random Material Architectures
Developed by Engenuity within Altair HyperWorks™, FiRMA predicts the structural performance to unlock the true potential of randomly-oriented chopped fibre composites. Engenuity will present a two-step analysis method to forecast the stiffness and strength of a population of parts. By providing designers with part’s predicted performance envelopes, design time, mass, time-to-cure, and costs can be minimized, while attaining performance with a known confidence.

  • 14.35 - 14.55: Multi-material lightweight design of complex systems enabled by a continuous Digital Process chain: example #Ultraleichtbausitz
The award-winning feasibility study #Ultraleichtbausitz (ultra lightweight seat) features a seat concept weighing a little over 10 kg, targeted for Hypercars and special long term applications such as air taxis. The concept has been created using a continuous digital process chain and the prototype was built in only one construction stage, within a time frame of 7 months from sketch to hardware. Relevant used new technologies include xFK in 3D (carbon fiber filament roving winding technology), Additive Manufacturing in metal and polymer, 3D|CORE intra-laminar reinforcing sandwich cores, 3D-printed cushions made of TPU and the use of sustainable textile Climatex by TWS. In the presentation the digital CAE, CAS, CAD and tool-driven process chain for the creation of the seat concept will be explained and illustrated.
